There weren’t a ton of clouds in the sky but the ones that were there played nicely in the wind and set off beautifully against the orange sky.

Chokoloskee, Florida
I spent a lot of time fishing around Chokoloskee as a kid. I have a ton of great memories of the area.
I hadn’t been back in over 20 years until this past February when I went back for a night sky program that was being put on by the National Parks Service.
While I waited for night to fall, I captured a sunset time-lapse. The clouds didn’t cooperate but it was still fun to be back in a place that had such a large impact on my childhood.

And just like that the amazing color was gone. All that was left was downtown LA, shrouded in fog.

I was in LA in January for work. I was lucky enough to sneak away a couple times to take some photos. I’d actually been to this spot at the Hollywood Bowl Overlook a few times but each time before the weather didn’t cooperate. Luckily, this time it did.
The elevation gives you a great perspective on just how large the LA area really is. It seems to go on forever.

This was a windy January morning. I’ve always loved this part of South Beach. It feels very different from the restaurant and club area that is just a few blocks away.
Pulling up at 6am, you pass the last of the club goers from the night before on their way home. You walk out onto the jetty in the pitch black and the ocean seems to go on forever.
Aside from the birds which are ever present thorn in my side, the only thing I would have changed is the cloud line. The clouds at the horizon crushed the moment of sunrise. Other than that I enjoyed the people moving in and out of frame, the ship that came into port and the wind that continuously swept the clouds from right to left.

This is my favorite moment of every sunrise. The sun is large in frame. It’s not too bright yet. It looks like an angry ball of fire climbing into the sky.
Alas, these clouds stole the moment. I do still think it was cool, peeking through.

It’s crazy how big container ships are. This one came in right as the sun was crossing the horizon. It’s usually my favorite part of each sunrise but the clouds obscured it. The ship gave me something else to focus on which was cool.
Of course the birds were all over this scene. Damn birds.

I was running a touch late after making the 45 minute drive down to South Beach so I didn’t get the very first light. Still, the orange blending to dark blue was incredibly beautiful on this early January morning.

End of the rainbow
I made this photo on a Saturday afternoon in Everglades National park. It’s not perfect but I wanted to share it anyway so I love how the width allowed to utilize the rainbow to split the picture in half and highlight the difference in light on each side of the rainbow.
