Today was full of incredible landscapes that I had never seen before. Petrified Forrest National Park was like driving onto Mars. Every turn revealed colors, rock formations, vistas and just plain awe inspiring beauty that is a world unto itself.

The most impressive aspect of the west for me, and this part of Arizona specifically, is the vastness of the landscape. You can see forever, which allows for incredible views of clouds and rain storms as they pass over.
It's incredible to me how you can see the rain falling from the clouds and hitting the ground.

Once again, the hills got me. I loved how the road disappears around the bend to the left and then reappears on the other side of the frame to disappear once again up a hill and around another bend.
And again, it was astounding how long I could stand in the road without having to worry about a car. I'll never get used to that.

If I could have one day over on the trip it would be this one. Not that I didn't enjoy it, but I definitely would have spent the afternoon and night in Santa Fe. Grabbing lunch outside and driving through Santa Fe was really cool, but I would have loved to explore the city some more.
Beyond Santa Fe, seeing the Breaking Bad house was really cool. I wish I didn't chicken out and just grab this photo but the owners sitting in the front yard really threw me off.

I made both of these photographs on desolate stretches of Route 66.
Dirt road with cattle guard in New Mexico
I was on this dirt road section of Route 66 for 18 miles. I loved how the long stretch turns right up the hill goes off into the unknown.
I also find cattle guards incredibly intriguing. I can't believe they work.
Road side sunflower
I made this photograph on a stretch of Route 66 where the vegetation on the side of the road had started to creep into the road itself. This section had a number of strong groups of sunflowers. I liked how this bunch stood out against the mountains in the background.

This was a full day on Route 66. I got visit The Big Texan, Cadillac Ranch, drive a dirt road, play with and almost crash my drone, drive into New Mexico and end the day with an awesome sunset time lapse.

This was a fun day. The weather broke enough to allow me to focus on some isolated storms and this awesome sunset behind the mountains in the distance.
My favorite part though is the cows grazing in the prairie. They look so tiny and are moving so fast.

This was an interesting day with a wide range of emotions. I got to visit a fun store full of a million different kinds of soda, drive on a road while singing a song named after it and visit the incredibly moving Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum.

A Texas road
I've always loved rolling hills. There's just something about driving over them and the way they look in photos that has always attracted me. I think it's because I grew up in South Florida and the closest thing we have to a hill there is a highway overpass.
So when I saw this stretch of road in Texas, there was no doubt I had to stop and make a photograph.
The best part? I stood in the middle of this road for 10 minuets and no other vehicles passed by. Pretty incredible.

This was a fun day of the trip because I got to see a lot of the old school Route 66 tourist attractions like random road side stores, the field from Field of Dreams and a bunch of small towns. The Big Blue Whale was my favorite of the day.
I've seen this attraction on countless Travel Channel shows over the years. It was surreal to actually walk in the whale. I can't imagine what it was like back in the day when you could actually slide down the slides and jump off the tail.
